"sorry, oxybenzone." the ad copy that broke a 1.9 ROAS ceiling.

Spending big, stuck at 1.9 ROAS, running copy that read like every other skincare brand's. We rewrote the ads to talk like a person, and cut CPA while scaling spend.

The ads were accurate and forgettable: feature-first copy, ingredient callouts, the structure every skincare brand runs. At significant daily spend, that had plateaued. The brief wasn't more budget. It was proving the account could grow on the same spend if the ads earned the stop.

Creative Strategy

This was 2023, and the instinct across the industry was still narrow targeting: interest stacks, lookalikes, the belief that finding the right audience was the job.

We ran open instead, and let the copy do the finding. If the words named the actual problem a person was dealing with, the right person would recognise themselves in it regardless of how loosely the audience was defined.

So the copy stopped explaining and started talking. "Sorry, oxybenzone." "What hair fall?" "Hello, firm skin." Each headline picked a fight with the problem itself: mock-apologetic, conversational, dropped into the scroll like a comment rather than an ad. The functional proof didn't disappear; it moved underneath the headline, into callouts and clinical detail for the reader who'd already stopped to look. The headline's only job was earning that stop.

Creative Production

A full revamp across four lines: the design held steady, the copy carried the shift.

Sunscreen, moisturiser, shampoo, conditioner, same product shots and brand recognition throughout, so the personality change never cost familiarity. Cost cap campaigns run at low bids expanded reach without overspending, and an email and WhatsApp automation funnel grew into a major share of total revenue on its own.

Nobody stops scrolling for "clinically proven ingredients." They stop for "sorry, oxybenzone." Same product. Completely different ad.
